When your account is opened, we note where you have your checking account, then when you want, you can easily move money between your ING DIRECT account and your checking account. Your checking account is what we call your 'linked' account.

ING DIRECT makes transactions using the Automated Clearing House (ACH). It is the same system used for direct deposits. You set up the link so you are the only one that has access to your money. When you want to move money to or from your ING DIRECT account, you simply go online or call to request the transaction. Generally transactions take 2 to 3 days to be completed.

How many links may I have?

How do I add a link or delete a link?
You now have 2 options. The easiest and simplest way is to login to your account at ingdirect.com and click on the ‘My Links’ tab to add additional links, or you can still send us a personal check that is pre-printed with your name and address, made out for a deposit amount of at least $1.00. Write your Customer Number, Account Number and the word "Link" on the memo line of the check. Keep in mind that the account you would like to link must be a checking account, not a brokerage or money market account. Voided or "starter" checks (checks without your personal information printed in the upper left corner) or check with the words "payable through" cannot be used. When you add a link, a notice will be sent to confirm. For your protection, if you added a link via mail, we'll place a temporary restriction on transfers to your new linked account for 5 business days. These are security measures to protect your money. To delete a link you can either call an ING DIRECT associate at 1-888-464-0727 between 7 AM and 9 PM or you can login to your account at ingdirect.com and click on the ‘My Links’ tab.

Mail your check to create a link or the form to delete a link to: ING DIRECT, P.O. Box 60, St. Cloud, MN 56302-0060.

How do I verify my link if I opened my account online?
If you opened your account online, you will need to verify your link. This security is needed since we don't receive a check from you confirming your personal account information. We send two small deposits, each less than $1.00, to your linked checking account. You should look in your checking account 2-4 business days after your ING DIRECT account was opened to determine the two amounts. Once you know the value of the amounts, login to your ING DIRECT account at ingdirect.com – you will be automatically directed to the Link Confirmation page. Please Note: Your initial deposit will be withdrawn from your linked account even if you have not validated the two small deposits.

If I opened a joint account is there anything different I need to do to verify my linked account?
If you opened a joint ING DIRECT account and both ING DIRECT Customers are registered owners on the linked account, then both will need to verify the link using the two small amounts we deposited to the checking account. You will both need to sign on with your individual Customer numbers and PINs. Then input the same two amounts that were deposited at your linked account. If you opened an account with a minor, they do not need to confirm the linked account.

If my checking account bank was recently bought by another bank do I need to update my link information?
If the information at the bottom of your checks is not changing, you will not need to do anything. However, if your bank issues you new checks with new account and routing numbers along the bottom, you can login to your account and click on the ‘My Links’ tab to update your link information by adding the new checking account and deleting the old one. Or, you can send us a new check, pre-printed, for a deposit of at least $1.00. Also enclose a brief note including your Customer Number and instructions to delete the old checking account and add the new account number.
