The Security Zone

Develop a few habits – good ones…

Online banking security is a partnership – we'll do our part, and we need you to do yours. It's been said that the biggest security flaw for most computers lies somewhere between the keyboard and the chair. With ING DIRECT, you have leading technology protecting your money. But developing good habits and using common sense goes a long way toward keeping your identity secure.

Secure your computer

  • Set your computer's operating system to receive automatic updates if possible; if not, download and install updates regularly.
  • Make sure you are using the most recent version of your Internet browser; previous versions can have security weaknesses that put you at risk.
  • Use an Internet browser that supports advanced security features such as phishing site detection, and support for extended security certificates, such as:
  • Here are the computer operating systems and web browsers that work best with our site:
    • Windows XP / Vista - Internet Explorer 7.0
    • Windows XP / Vista - Firefox 3.0
    • Apple Macintosh – Safari 3.2 & 4.0
    • Apple Macintosh – Firefox 3.0
  • Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software and set them to auto-update as well.
  • Use identity theft protection software like Trusteer's Rapport to fight online fraud. It's FREE.
  • Use a firewall with default settings at a very minimum.

Make online security a habit

  • Don't click pop-ups and don't download files from websites you don't trust.
  • Be sure web addresses begin with HTTPS (not HTTP) and look for a key or padlock icon in your browser window.
  • Look for the green address bar in your web browser indicating the site you're on is using extended security certificates, and is a genuine website.
  • While you are visiting a secure banking site, finish your banking, make sure you sign out at the end of your session, and close your browser before you move on.
  • Don't click links or open attachments in suspicious emails.
  • Never send personal or sensitive information by email.
  • Choose passwords that are difficult to guess and change them on a regular basis. Memorize them and never share them with anyone.
  • Don't use the same passwords for all websites, especially for secured sites like ours.
  • Back up your important computer files at least once a month.
  • If you bank online in public, make sure no one is able to see over your shoulder, better yet, select to hide your typing.
